Finding the perfect table for your dining room
One of the main reasons I love being an interior designer is that it never gets dull or repetitive…every property brings new problems to be solved…and we love a challenge!
On a recent project, our client wanted a 14-seater dining table, the search for which prompted us to write this checklist…
How much space do you have in your dining room?
Be realistic – it would be great to be able to seat the whole family at Christmas, but do you really want to be squeezing past a table that’s too big for the room every other day of the year? Ideally, you’d have 1m between the edges of the table and the walls, allowing people to walk around the room when diners are seated. Consider extending tables for the occasions when you might have a larger crowd.

Choose a shape that’s fit for purpose
Round tables are great for socialising and encouraging group conversation, but they look best centralised in the room. If your dining room is multi-functional a square or rectangular table which can be pushed up against a wall, may be more suitable. If your design style is contemporary, or you’re concerned about little ones banging their heads on sharp corners, opt for an oval table which offers a softer look than a rectangle. Lastly, consider the positioning of the table legs – a central column or pedestal will allow you to squeeze in more chairs than a table with four legs.
Will your table have multiple uses?
If you’re going to be working and kids will be doing homework at the dining table, you may want to consider a more durable tabletop, than if your dining room is used only for occasional dinner parties.
What is your budget?
Most dining tables come in standard sizes, with the largest generally being around 320cm long. In most cases, a table of this size will comfortably seat 12 people. Therefore, if you’re looking to accommodate more guests, you’re getting into bespoke sizes, which come at a premium!
