How to make a bed like a pro!

The key to a luxurious, welcoming bed is layering! Think beyond the matching duvet and pillow sets, and try out an eclectic mix of textures, within a set colour palette. Choose all neutrals for example and the look will be cohesive, without being matchy matchy - I do this with bedroom furniture too!

Our go to for bedding is French linen because of its natural, casual appearance (great if you hate ironing!) and temperature regulating qualities.

The Layers

  1. The fitted sheet - my general rule is that all bedding should be white…but all rules have their exceptions! Plain coloured bedding is acceptable (in my opinion) when there are no other white elements in the room, and in children’s bedrooms.

  2. The flat sheet - the large hem goes at the top (leave a gap between the top of the sheet and the bed head) and tuck the end of the sheet under the mattress.

  3. The quilt (not to be confused with the duvet) - tuck under the mattress at the bottom and sides using hospital corners, then fold over at the top, along with the flat sheet.

  4. Pillows & duvet - fold the top of the duvet over for that extra comfy look! We like mixing pillow sizes to add to the layered affect - here we’ve used three square and two super king pillows to ensure fullness across the bed.

  5. Throw cushions & blankets - we’ve used one large rectangular cushion for this look, to balance out the pillows behind.

For this look we chose a patterned quilt to break up the solid duvet cover and pillows. The finishing touches have brought texture to the bed with fringing on the cushion and a waffle throw. We’ve used varying shades of black and grey to avoid it looking like a matching set, with hints of beige brought in to lift the palette.
